
Many of urban theoriests agree that tourism will be one of most influential factors determining global urbanism in the coming years. 2008 Beijing Olympic event does not attract as much foreign tourist as expected. Yet, according to BusinessWeek, China will be the world's largest tourist destination by 2020. This once-curtained, yet now-opening, socialist country will also be the number four in the world in terms of the number of tourist out-going aborad.

Chinese government spent much for ambitious landmarks for Bejing 2008 Olympic Games, hoping these iconic and monumental strucutres would contitue to attract a number of visitors afterwards. NYT reports they are empty now.

Kyoto, known as Japan's most historic city, is in debate around a 118,000 square foot aquarium in the park proposed by Orix Real Estate Corporation that argues the project would bring 2 million more visitors to the city. Some information from the media:
